Elliott Heads is located at the northern mouth of the Elliott River and is surrounded by rural cane and small-crop farms. The township is serviced by a local general store, kiosk and council owned caravan park which is situated right behind the beach and surf life-saving club.

The river is a popular spot for calm-water swimming, sailboarding and occasional jetskiing and a boat ramp is located a short distance upriver at the small township of Riverview.

Just three miles off the Elliott Heads coast lays the acclaimed Cochrane's Artificial Reef with numerous sunken vessels and aircraft. The site is recognised as one of the best artificial reefs in Australia and is a must for keen SCUBA divers and fishermen.
